Congratulations to Phil Mickelson on his historic win at the PGA Championship last weekend. What an impressive feat to take on the younger pros and come out on top.

Apart from this wonderful human interest story is the back story about what he did to prepare for the event. It is a story that most of us who have struggled to achieve and maintain good, if not exceptional health, know.

It starts with a great motivator

I know few people who can transform their lives and never go back. Some know they need to make changes to their habits — eating and exercise — but fall short of the energy it takes to make the leap.

For the majority of us, Mickelson included, the motivating factor boiled down to health. I have coached many people whose motivation was seeing a scary blood glucose lab result. Others were staring at knee or other joint surgery, followed by weeks or months of rehab. You can read about Mickelson’s motivation here.
