I was thinking about this just the other day as I recalled a pneumonic our pastor gave explaining the stages of sin: Some people consent and have slavery to sin. He went a bit further as his last stage is a spiritual blindness that happens when we despair of being able to quit the habit we have formed and are slaves to. In the end, these poor souls start to justify their actions, perhaps concluding that what they are doing is not so sinful, or even going to the extreme of denying that sin even exists.

Those with spiritual blindness who cannot help themselves require an intercessor; someone who will pray and sacrifice for them so that they, too, will be able to see, as you articulate, that giving up the old ways will bring them something so much better -- God Himself, pouring out His love and His mercy.

Thanks for the read!
