It is a curious thing about politics and religion in the United States. At one time we as a nation would not have a Catholic in the White House. While I was far too young to understand much of it, I remember conversations surrounding JFK and fears that if he was elected, he would put the Pope ahead of the Constitution.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the electorate had the luxury of choosing our representatives who focused on American values and what was once quintessentially American culture? My guess is that those values have sadly been set aside for the very reasons you have articulated.
