It is a sad comment, indeed, that for some people choosing pet(s) over raising a children is better. I have seen many individuals and couples who avoided child-rearing in favor of the "freedom" to do whatever, whenever, and bringing along their pet to enjoy the fun regret some of their decision when they are older.

Aging without a supportive family, or any family, really, can lead to financial, medical, and social trouble when these people have no one to tend to their needs.

A pet is great, but I don't see one coming by to make a meal or do your laundry when you are housebound; or if you are sitting in a nursing facility watching your fellow residents enjoy visits from their family.

Thanks for the thought-provoking article!
